I believe it depends on the sin, scripture says we store up wrath while we remain in our sin.......I think from romans 9 that its a demonstration of Gods power on the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction, lakes of fire.....I think its possibly like being in lava and never dying, but very possibly even worse......Spurgeon said to shun all images of hell that made it appear less terrifying for the sinners sakes

it will be a place you will be able to look and say "whoa God is powerful" according to romans 9

Hell is the absence of God. Not some burning fictional lake of fire that people like to visualize.

Heaven is a place of spiritual contentment in the presence of God. Nothing physical, not streets of gold, pearly gates, or fluffy clouds.

Last night at 3:22am I saw hell again. A lady that had just died was brought to my home so that I could hear her story. I don't know if she came with Jesus, angels or demons, I could not see anyone else. She was a Christian at one time, she was being taken to hell. She was abut 45 and looked very old. She had hate and bitterness in her heart because of being betrayed by friends at church. She turned away from Jesus because of this. I felt so sad, what really bothered me is that when she left my home, she was being dragged off to hell and she was sobbing. I knew that she was going to be in pain and torment for all eternity, but I also knew that she had many chances to repent and chose not to. Remembering that this evening is very sobering, I don't want anyone to have to go there.
